Wolfram von Eschenbach: Parzival or the Quest for the Grail (CLASS IS FULL)

Around AD 1200 one of the greatest medieval European and German poets, Wolfram von Eschenbach, used a French fragment by Chrétien de Troyes to create the definitive story of Parzival’s search and initial failure to attain the Holy Grail. In the process he provides both an allegory of man’s search for meaning and a colorful but unusual panorama of chivalry and tolerance, while critiquing the chivalric code of his own class. And we learn all about the high price of the proper question not asked at the right time. Knights and ladies, lords and monks, great battles and some deep mysteries are all woven into this neatly structured tapestry.

HERBERT A. ARNOLD is Professor of German Studies and Letters, Emeritus. He is currently revisiting some of his early research interests, including the European Baroque era, and continuing work on a biographical-historical investigation of Central European history in the 20th century. Most of his work in the past has centered on the intersection between history and literature in a pan-European context. His publications range in time and subject matter from late 15th century manuscripts to contemporary popular culture.
